Steam rice in the microwave

Here’s a fuss-free method for steaming rice that results in light, fluffy grains. These cooking times work for up to 400g (2 cups) of rice.

Step 1:
Place the rice in a microwave-safe bowl and add enough water to cover by 2cm. To measure, place your index finger on the top of the rice – the water should reach the first joint of your finger.

Step 2:
Cover with 2 layers of plastic wrap. Line the microwave turntable with non-stick baking paper to catch any spills. Cook on High/800watts/100% for 5 minutes.

Step 3:
Cook, covered, on Medium/ 500watts/50% for a further 7 minutes. Set aside for 5 minutes – this allows the rice to continue cooking. Use a fork to separate grains.
